IHM PARTICIPATES IN EHEALTH AFRO CONFERENCE
On October 2 – 4 2017, IHM Southern Africa participated in the eHealthAfro Conference which took place at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg, South Africa. The conference was organized by the African Centre for eHealth Excellence (ACFEE). This platform integrated a range of contributions from across Africa looking at eHealth and its impact on healthcare transformation with “eHealth for Universal Health Coverage” as the conference theme.
The two-and-a-half-day conference brought together leaders who exchanged ideas and listed out strategies on how to take eHealth forward within the region. The conference started off in plenary banquet style with 8 people per table, where tables extracted lessons from keynote presentations and redefined those lessons into action items and recommendations for African ministries of health.
Mbulelo Cabuko, Director of Health Information at South Africa’s National Department of Health proposed that Africa should develop its own measurements of eHealth progress that provides more depth than WHO and the Global eHealth Observatory can provide. Daniel Morenzi, East African Communities’ eHealth lead, describes its regional ID project. Each citizen will have a Unique Personal Identifier (UPI), including biometric data, and it will be used to access healthcare.
The conference also introduced a platform called “Use Case Bazaars” where organizations had the opportunity to deliver half an hour presentations on their solutions or products. This was an interactive session where presenters welcomed comments, questions, and suggestions on the presentations. IHM in conjunction with the Ministry of Health made use of this opportunity and showcased the work being done with the CMIS project. Other organization who were presenting in the Use-Case Bazaars included CSIR, Jembi, HISP, HTS, the University of Pretoria just to name a few. IHM also participated as an exhibitor, showcasing the various projects we are currently working on and used this opportunity to promote the work that we do. The eHealth AFRO conference is an expedient opportunity eHealth stakeholder engagement and information sharing within Africa. We at IHM look forward to participating in more of these platforms in future.
